Have Your Cake and Don’t Eat It

This weeks recipe is for a wedding cake, but you can’t eat it!

Before I get on with the recipe though, some housework…

  • There were no entries for the challenge I set a couple of weeks ago, therefore there is no winner to announce :-(

Wedding Cake Recipe

TYPE; 10 CMS (4”)* SQUARE CARD
TIME; 2 hours

INGREDIENTS;

*To make the cake this size you will need 1xA3 or 12” x 12” card, however you can reduce the size of the templates and make a smaller size using only A4 card

  • Wedding cake and box template from Lavenders Blue Design OR template for square favour box (you will need to adjust the size of the template to get three ascending sized boxes)
  • 1x 14cms square gold or silver mirror board
  • 1 x A3 or 12”x12” sheet of white card (or A4 sheet) if making smaller cake
  • 4 x A4 sheets of white card
  • 4 x A4 acetate sheets
  • 1 meter/yard of lace trim, ribbon or paper border
  • variety of embellishments such as bows, pearls, ribbon roses
  • gold embossing powder and clear Versamark pad
  • 1 meter/yard ribbon for the box tie/handles
  • Clear glue or double-sided tape for the acetate box
  • Glue gun or other strong glue
  • Double-sided tape

RECIPE;

WEDDING CAKE

  1. Cut out the cake mat in silver or gold mirror board or similar

  2. Cut out all the cake base and lid sections in white card (I used 250grms), you could emboss these or use a delicately printed card

  3. Fold all the base and lid sections along the dashed lines inwards, and then fold into shape. You do not have to use glue, the boxes will stay together if you fold the tabs inside the adjacent lip section and will be held in place by the decorative trim added to the outside

  4. You can add the trimmings and embellishments either before you assemble the cake or afterwards. I assembled the cake first and then added them, but it will depend what type of embellishments you are adding, if you are going to heat emboss this should be done before folding the boxes into shape

  5. To assemble the cake put double sided tape on the underneath of each box base, attach the box base to the cake mat, put the lid on the base and then attach the mid cake layer to the base lid. Do the same for the top layer.

  6. Using a glue gun add your trim, ribbon or other embellishment around the bottom edge of each lid

  7. Add further embellishments to the sides and top of the cake and to the cake mat

ACETATE BOX

  1. Cut two of the box side A sections from acetate, cut one each of B and C, if you wish to decorate the box with heat embossing do it before you make up the box

  2. Fold each of the sections inwards along the fold lines

  3. Glue the side tabs to the inside of each next section using transparent adhesive or double-tape. You will be gluing them in the following order; A,B,A,C.

  4. Fold the bottom sections in and insert the tab on section B into the slot on section C, with the tabs on sections A on the inside

  5. Place the cake in the display box and then thread ribbon through each of the holes on the top flaps and tie in a bow.
